For too long, people have been thinking that technology is neutral. Sadly, that is not the case.  Interestingly, AI developers expect a surprise for themselves. Amazon, for example, has found that their in-house software prefers men’s job applications over those of women’s applications.

At the moment, there is a problem with large data collection. AI is used to track complete cities in China, drawing data collected from various sources. For AI to improve, the amount of data needed to be successful will only increase. This means that there will be an increased risk of people collecting, storing, and using information without their consent, or even their knowledge.

The system was used to determine whether people would be granted amnesty and ended up discriminating against African-American and Spanish men. When a team of journalists studied the 10,000 defendants in Broward County, Florida, it emerged that the system predicted that black defendants were at greater risk of being racially violated than what happened in the real world, while predicting the opposite for white defendants.

The unethical uses of AI  go beyond data collection and attention-grabbing: It involves the use of information to manipulate performance, online and offline, in a way that undermines rational self-determination. Well, attempts to deceive morals are ancient, but they can get more deceiving when they use AI programs. The provision of in-depth communication of users with data systems and in-depth personal information is what you provide, they are at risk of “slippage”, fraud and deception. With enough prior data, algorithms can be used to identify individuals or small groups with only the input type that can affect these particular people.

 AI has completely transformed the data extraction sector into both formal and informal documents, including handwritten forms. For example, identification of an invoice number can be easily eliminated and often requires the use of complex templates and keyword tags for specific fields and labels.

 One can look at a document and get an invoice number easily, no matter what format it is in because they know what to look for. However, now AI software can also do it without additional programming.

AI tends to make mistakes, mainly because of two factors: they are man-made, so real code can contain bugs or logical errors; and it is usually based on probability, which means that even if the code is fully developed, its actions are based on incomplete information and will always have a certain level of risk.

Recent technological advances require new legislation, to answer ethical questions that have never been asked before. When artificial intelligence makes an error, who is to be blamed? Its owner? a team of developers who made it? When we start mixing biological tissues with robots, will these robots be considered human, or something in between? Will they have rights? When we start installing microchips in the human brain, what is the line between the individual and the cyborg?

 To be honest, we are still far from that level of technology, but we can still see it in our lifetime and be influenced by the new laws.

All the challenges we have faced so far will have a huge impact on our society, but the two most important ones are job losses and changes in human relationships.

 Technological progress has been taking place for many years now, replacing man in many jobs and killing old jobs, while new job opportunities have emerged.

Education is a requirement of the hour when it comes to the successful implementation of ethical AI principles. Humans can distinguish right from wrong, but AI algorithms do not have the power to do so. The responsibility rests with the engineer who trains the AI.
