The richest form of data- Videos

We keep hearing that in today’s world, data is one of the most valuable commodities and it is finding its use cases in almost any field it touches. Right from grocery shopping to corporate office structure to governance and administration, data is playing a huge role in improving the management of these establishments.

Data comes in various formats such as image, audio, video, text, etc. The introduction of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine learning (ML) has helped in making the most of the data collected in raw format by converting it into analytical and statistical information. Videos have proven to be the richest in information as they are like compound data consisting of all types of data. Let us see how videos have revolutionized the world of AI in ways one could only imagine until now.

Surveillance and security

Videos play an important role in surveillance and security. We are used to seeing CCTV cameras all around us. A video recording from these cameras captures any kind of suspicious activities and helps authorities to identify and apprehend perpetrators. Video analytics and insights from these CCTV camera footages help enable these security measures on the personal as well as enterprise level.

Cameras can also be used in video monitors which assist us with baby monitoring and adult monitoring.  In countries like the USA, these video monitoring devices are in high demand.

We get to see the live feed of these cameras through an app on our phone from anywhere we are. In case of an emergency, we can immediately alert the authorities for quick support. Digital surveillance services providing companies like Hikvision, Alegion, Amcrest, Dahua, Automaton AI etc. have made tremendous breakthroughs by using AI software in their multi-sync camera systems.

Sports

Applications like move.ai make use of videos of players on the ground to study the way they move while playing a sport. This data helps in analyzing the player and note their stats such as their speed and moves, deeply understanding the techniques of body movement in the sport. These videos are further broken down into smaller, more detailed segments and used for training new players.

Another use of AI applications in sports is tracking the display durations of video ads during sporting events.

Retail

Recently, companies like Engage3(Prize annotation), Bungee Tech, TheRealReal (Product tagging/features using text), have come up with state-of-the-art applications in our retail industries, providing a better than ever shopping experience for the customers, of course leading to a rise in sales. They make use of rich video data to understand the behavioral and shopping patterns of buyers.

Global retail mogul Walmart has been using video data to understand the buyer persona. This has helped tremendously in retaining old customers and acquiring new ones. Walmart has also acquired AI and ML companies like Int.AI and Dataturks to strengthen its digital arm and focus on data analytics. One example of Walmart’s machine learning applications is the automated cashier in their stores which bills products by noting them through a camera and accepts money digitally as well as in cash.

Another incredible example of the use of video data to improve customer experience is Amazon Go, an initiative by Amazon. These are Amazon stores where a customer can just enter the store, pick up what they need, and leave. That’s it. No checkouts, no lines, no waiting, just pure blissful shopping experience. Amazon uses cameras and sensors at these stores to track your movements. If you pick up a product, it is automatically added to your digital cart and you can pay through the app at your convenience.

OTT Platforms

We live in an age of globalization and entertainment is making the most of this. We have OTT platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime, TUBI, etc which host a variety of video entertainment (movies and shows) for their users around the world. These video streaming companies make the most of rich video data to augment their business sales. For eg., NETFLIX heavily analyses the usage data of their users to understand their viewing patterns and interests and provide unique recommendations for every user. They also analyze their video data to constantly churn out high-intensity images from the videos and use them as custom thumbnails for users. This results in a huge spike in the likeability factor from the users’ perspective.

Medical

Video data has found its way into the medical sector and helped us progress tremendously over the past decade.

For medical procedures where we need to diagnose an internal condition, microscopic cameras are inserted inside our body through our arteries (or colon in case of a colonoscopy) and these cameras record high-quality videos giving deep insight about the internal condition. This makes it easier to decide the course of treatment for the same. Using AI algorithms, these cameras even help to detect the exact problem area and diagnose the condition as well.

Similarly for chemotherapy, scanners, and cameras, spot the exact location of the tumor making it easy to focus the chemotherapy on the exact areas which are affected by cancer.

Video x-rays and sonograms help us to get see-through imaging of the affected area and the video tremendously helps in locating the problem and also gives more information about the same.

High-end cameras recording complex medical surgeries as well as pathologies like dentistry can use machine learning to create virtual models of the surgery for training and education purposes.

Industrial Processes

Video data has played a huge role in the recent development in complex industrial processes. For example, a high-end camera can be used in mining equipment to see the deepest topography as and when the machine is drilling. This has saved a lot of time in locating and extracting several minerals as well as crude oil in mining.

Modern industries with assembly line manufacturing, make use of multiple cameras to supervise the entire process and assist mechanical AI arms in carrying out their automated functions. This helps in activities like aligning, packaging, sorting, etc.

Satellite data

From Sputnik(1957), the first-ever satellite to orbit around our planet to the latest satellite TDRS-M by NASA, we have come a long way in satellite monitoring. These satellites have constantly improved in quality and technology over the years holding tremendous surveillance capacities. Before the invention of drones, satellites orbiting around the earth have been the main source of top-view imagery of our planet which has led to the creation of digital maps and GPRS technologies. Video imagery from satellites has also helped us understand the terrain of our planet in regions that are not so easily accessible.

Military applications

Military tech needs to be the best in class and heavy-duty for significant use. The most powerful armies in the world today boast an array of latest tech like GPS trackers, long-range cameras, high-end drones, homing missiles with sharp cameras to track and follow a target, etc. For all this equipment, rich video data is a driving factor. With the current speed of development using HD video data, future possibilities are endless.

Virtual Reality/ Augmented Reality

Videos have developed a lot since they first came into the picture. Starting from black and white fast imagery to High definition videos and eventually giving rise to Virtual reality (VR) and Augmented reality (AR). VR and AR have essentially disrupted the video industry. They are a way of seeing futuristic videos like a virtual space, 3-D holograms, uplifted terrain structures, and all the technology we saw in Tony Stark’s office.

VR and AR have opened up a whole new array in the fields of medical science, combat expertise, gaming, 3D modeling, etc. VR/AR makes use of rich video data to create virtual environments. This technology serves a major purpose of education through training modules in sectors like medical surgeries, complex mechanical procedures, etc. At the same time, they can also be used to create different experiences around the world. For example, a person can experience walking at Niagara Falls from the other side of the globe with the help of virtual reality. This needs high-quality video content as input data.

As we can see that out of all the data formats, videos are the ones that are considered to be the richest in information as they are a combination of a large number of simultaneous image frames along with audio recordings collecting and relaying infinite data points.

We can make use of these data points for training ML models to get the most accurate outputs reaching a step closer to our dream of automated living.
